Memory keeps facts, decisions, and session summaries for later conversations.

> **Experimental, enabled in the shipped configuration**
>
> Memory is experimental and off by default, while the shipped configuration explicitly sets `memory.enabled = true`.

## Turn memory on or off

**--no-memory**

Disable memory for this session; it overrides every other setting.

**--experimental-memory**

Enable memory for this session.

**RIGHTNOW\_MEMORY**

`1` or `true` enables memory; `0` or `false` force-disables it.

**\[memory\] enabled**

The persistent setting in `config.toml`; the shipped file sets `true`.

At startup the highest matching row wins. Headless runs ignore both flags; see [Headless Mode](https://www.rightnowai.co/docs/headless). In a session, `/memory on` and `/memory off` toggle memory without deleting stored files. `/memory` is offered only in a session that started with memory on; a session started with memory off needs a restart to enable it.

## What is stored

Paths start at the effective product home: `%USERPROFILE%\.rightnow` on Windows and `~/.rightnow` on macOS and Linux, unless `RIGHTNOW_HOME` overrides it.

**<RIGHTNOW\_HOME>/memory/MEMORY.md**

Global facts and preferences shared across projects.

**<RIGHTNOW\_HOME>/memory/<project-slug>-<hash8>/MEMORY.md**

Workspace-specific conventions and context.

**<RIGHTNOW\_HOME>/memory/<project-slug>-<hash8>/sessions/**

Dated session summaries and logs.

**<RIGHTNOW\_HOME>/memory/<project-slug>-<hash8>/index.sqlite**

Search index for workspace memory and sessions.

The hash comes from the repository's origin remote, or from the directory path when there is none, so clones and worktrees of one repository share workspace memory.

## TUI commands

**/memory**

Browse global, workspace, and session files in a read-only preview. In the browser, `y` copies a path, `x` twice deletes a session file, and `t` toggles memory.

**/remember \[note\]**

Review and save a durable note to global memory. With no text, the next line you type becomes the note.

**/flush**

Write a model-generated summary of this session to a dated session log now.

**/dream**

Consolidate scattered entries and session logs into deduplicated topics. It also runs at session end, at most every 4 hours and after 3 new sessions.

`/flush` and `/dream` appear only while memory is enabled.

## Search behavior

The index uses FTS5 full-text search, plus vector search when an embedding model is configured. The shipped configuration leaves the embedding model empty, so search is full-text only; set a model that your endpoint actually serves to add vector search. Shipped values, to merge into `<RIGHTNOW_HOME>/config.toml`:

**TOML**

```toml
[memory]
enabled = true
[memory.embedding]
model = ""
```

## Clear memory

`rightnow memory` has one subcommand, `clear`. `rightnow memory clear` targets the current workspace by default. It lists the existing paths, then asks: press Enter to cancel, or enter y or yes to confirm. If none of the selected memory paths exists, the command exits without asking for confirmation.

**--workspace**

The default: the current workspace memory file, session memory logs, and search index.

**--global**

Only the global `MEMORY.md` file.

**--all**

The current workspace plus global memory.

**--yes, -y**

Skip the confirmation prompt.

**PowerShell**

```powershell
rightnow memory clear
```

> **Warning: Deleting without confirmation**
>
> This deletes the current workspace memory and global MEMORY.md without asking. Review both scopes first.
>
> **PowerShell**
>
> ```powershell
> rightnow memory clear --all --yes
> ```

> **Warning: Review remembered facts**
>
> Memory can become stale, and old session results carry a staleness note. Verify recalled commands, dependencies, services, and deployment details before relying on them.
